What event coordinators do
An event coordinator handles the execution layer of an event: vendor confirmations, run sheets, registration desks, room sets, timelines and the hundred small things that have to be true on the day. Coordinators usually work to a manager’s plan rather than owning the client relationship, which makes it the most common way into the profession and the title most often advertised to people with no formal events background.
What it pays
The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a separate figure for event coordinators. It reports one occupation (meeting, convention and event planners) with a median of $59,440 a year. Coordinator postings are the entry rung of that occupation, so treat the median as a mid-career number rather than a starting one, and read the salary on each listing below for what employers in your market are actually offering today.

What employers typically ask for
- A high school diploma; many postings ask for a bachelor’s degree but accept relevant experience instead
- One to two years in hospitality, administration or customer-facing work
- Evidence you can run a timeline and chase vendors without being chased
- Comfort with spreadsheets, registration platforms and a shared calendar
- Evening and weekend availability, the work happens when the event happens
- A certification in event or wedding planning, which most postings list as preferred rather than required
Where the job leads
Event assistant or intern
Support role on a team. You are learning the run sheet, the vendor list and the room set, usually for six to eighteen months.
Event coordinator
You own defined pieces of an event end to end (registration, catering liaison, day-of logistics) to somebody else’s plan.
Event manager
You own whole events, the budget and the client relationship, and you brief coordinators rather than being briefed.
Senior manager or director
You own a portfolio or a department, set the strategy and are accountable for the commercial result.
Most employers listing this role ask for a certification.
