Event director jobs

Open event director roles across the US, updated weekly, plus what the job involves, what employers ask for, and what it actually pays.

What event directors do

An event director runs the function rather than the event. That means the annual calendar and its commercial targets, the team, the agency and venue relationships, the budget across a portfolio, and the reporting line into a board, a general manager or a client executive. Directors are hired for judgment and accountability. Hands-on delivery sits with the managers reporting to them.

What it pays

BLS does not publish a separate figure for event directors, the occupation it reports, meeting, convention and event planners, has a median of $59,440 a year across all levels. Director postings sit above that median because they carry team and budget accountability, but we will not put a number on that gap without a published source. Where an employer has advertised a salary, you will see it on the listing below.

The occupation as a whole

  • 155,800 jobs in 2024
  • 5% growth projected 2024–2034
  • about 15,500 openings a year

Source: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook (opens in a new tab). Checked July 2026. Figures cover meeting, convention and event planners, the occupation this role sits inside.

What employers typically ask for

  • Seven or more years in events, including several managing other people
  • Ownership of a departmental or portfolio budget, not a single event budget
  • A commercial record: revenue, sponsorship, cost reduction or measured business outcomes
  • Experience presenting to and being challenged by senior stakeholders
  • Vendor and agency management at contract level
  • A senior credential (a master’s certificate, GCPE®, CMP or equivalent) is common on director postings

Where the job leads

  1. Event manager

Owning individual events, their budgets and their stakeholders.

  2. Senior event manager

The flagship events, plus line management of coordinators and managers.

  3. Head of events

The whole calendar for one organization or one region, with a departmental budget.

  4. Event director or VP of events

Strategy, commercial accountability and the team. Often the point at which planners move to consultancy or start their own practice instead.

Most employers listing this role ask for a certification.

Ours takes about six months, self-paced.
