New York
Event planning jobs in New York
New York runs the densest event calendar in the United States: trade shows at Javits, corporate hospitality around Midtown, fashion and media activations, and a wedding market that spans five boroughs and three price tiers. It is the hardest market to break into and the one with the most doors.

The New York market
New York is two markets that barely overlap. The first is the trade show and association business built around the Javits Center, which runs on long lead times, union labour rules and general service contractors. You will work with Freeman or GES rather than booking your own rigging, and the show floor operates under agreements that catch out planners arriving from other cities. The second is the corporate and social market above 34th Street, where budgets are high, timelines are short, and reputation moves entirely by referral.Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, checked July 24, 2026
Entry-level coordinator roles here are competitive and often sit inside agencies, hotels or in-house corporate teams rather than with independent planners. That matters for how you break in: the realistic first step is an assistant or coordinator post at a hotel, a venue or an agency, not a solo practice. Independents who do well in New York tend to specialise hard (non-profit galas, pharma meetings, Indian weddings, fashion week activations) because generalists are competing against every agency in the city.
Cost of living compresses what the salary numbers actually mean. A coordinator earning above the national median can still be worse off than a peer in Atlanta, and most planners here treat the first two years as paid training rather than a living. Freelance day rates for on-site production staff are the fastest route to a workable income while you build a client base.
When New York hires
Two peaks. September through early December is the heaviest: trade show season at Javits, corporate holiday parties, and the autumn gala calendar. May and June bring the wedding and graduation peak. January and February are the quiet months, and August empties out as the corporate market goes on holiday.
