Chicago is the trade show capital of North America. McCormick Place is the largest convention center on the continent, and the city's events economy is built around it, association meetings, manufacturing and medical trade shows, and the hotel and agency infrastructure that supports them.

The Chicago market
If you want a career in association and trade show work, Chicago is the strongest market in the country to build it in. Major medical, manufacturing and hospitality shows rotate through McCormick Place, and the concentration of association headquarters in the city means there are more salaried meeting planner roles here per capita than almost anywhere else. Those roles are stable, benefits-carrying and much less seasonal than the wedding or brand-activation work that dominates other metros.Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, checked July 24, 2026
Union labour is a fact of working at McCormick Place, and it has caught out enough visiting planners to be worth stating plainly: what you may and may not carry, set up or plug in on the show floor is governed by agreements, and the fastest way to lose a day is to assume otherwise. Learning those rules early is a genuine competitive advantage for a coordinator, because it is knowledge most applicants do not have.
The social market is real but weather-bound. Chicago wedding season is short and intense, and venues price accordingly. Winter weddings are cheaper and easier to book, which is a useful angle for a new planner trying to build a portfolio without competing for the same twelve Saturdays in September that everyone else wants.
When Chicago hires
The trade show calendar peaks in spring and autumn, with major shows anchoring March through May and September through November. Wedding season is compressed into May to October. January and February are genuinely quiet for social work, though association planning continues year-round.
